While Santa Claus is getting ready for his long journey down to earth, the wind blows away his hat. Desperately, Santa Claus starts looking for it, because nobody will recognize him without his hat. Hoping that the children might be able to help him find his hat, he decides to go down to earth. His search first leads him to the far north where he meets the reindeers which do not recognize him at first. Santa Claus is desperate therefore the reindeers decide to help him look for his hat and accompany him on his journey. Next stop is Lapland where Santa Claus meets some children who also do not recognize him at first. The children feel sorry for the hatless Santa Claus and give him one of their hats. Now Santa Claus looks rather like a seal hunter from Lapland than Santa Claus. After having thanked the children for their offer, he leaves for India. The Indian kids are as helpless as the Laplanders and offer him one of their turbans. But Santa Claus only looks like an old snake charmer, and has to continue his journey. Now he comes to China. The Chinese children are very sorry not to be of any help to Santa Claus and offer him one of their hats. Santa Claus now looks like an old man working in the rice field. His search leads him to the America, then. Again he meets helpful children who offer him a cowboy hat which makes him look like an old cowboy. Santa Claus is close to a nervous breakdown. The reindeers suggest that they should go to Africa as well. It is very hot there. While the reindeers take a rest, Santa Claus meets some African children. "Have you happen to come across my hat?", he asks and draws a picture of the lost hat in the sand. And really, the children have seen something that could be Santa Claus' hat, hanging in a nearby fig tree. Santa Claus cannot believe his ears. He goes to the tree, and really, his hat hangs right in the branches of the tree, partly occupied by some birds which have built a nest there. Santa Claus is very happy. Carefully he removes his hat from the tree, anxious not to disturb the birds. It is high time for him to go, because Christmas is already very close.
