Marie loves all kinds of plants. So she dreams of becoming a horticulturist. But in the 18th century a girl must not even think of something like that.Marie lives with her father, the gardener, in Doctor Mesmer’s house. She visits the school of the order of the Elisabethians. There she is being prepared for taking the veil and becoming a nurse. Marie herself has a completely different wish: She wants to become a horticulturist, although in the 18th century girls are no candidates for that profession. But by surprise she is supported by Doctor Mesmer: she is allowed to design a part of his garden which is to be presented to his guests on the same evening when a lyrical drama composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is performed at the house. Everything is prepared perfectly for the festivities, but during a bitterly cold night it looks as if the plants were going to be killed by frost. Marie and the baker’s son Jakob, who is in love with her, act quickly and prevent the worst. Marie’s new and exceptional ideas amaze the guests.
Together with Jakob Doctor Mesmer succeeds in getting Marie much nearer to her professional fortune as well as private happiness.
