When Aunt Charlotte goes to the big church, she takes Madeleine with her. While her aunt sits in the chapel, the girl takes a good look at everything and then they meet again. That day, Aunt Charlotte doesn't show up. Madeleine walks outside and down to the river because the sunlight glitters so beautifully on the water and the fishermen are sitting there.
She fulfils a long-cherished heart’s desire and dares to ask if she can hold a fishing rod in the water. She enjoys this very much until a boy engages her in conversation: Would she give him the fish if she fetches one? And could she kill the fish herself? Madeleine hasn't even thought of that yet ... She prefers to give the fishing rod back and is glad when Aunt Charlotte finds her.
