Postcards collected in an album by a little girl in the 1930ies are the starting point for this extraordinary novel in which fiction and reality meet. The author followed the traces of those postcards, researched for many years and talked with contemporary witnesses. Then she skilfully intertwined facts and fiction.
Leny Goldstein is born on 23rd November 1929 in Breda, a Dutch town. 1942, one day before her 13th birthday, she is murdered in the concentration camp Auschwitz Birkenau. Between those two dates spreads the life of a Jewish girl, of her family and friends, in the beginning optimistic and confident, with best conditions for a happy future. Even though the reprisals of the National Socialists increase after the German invasion, the Goldsteins don’t flee and don’t go into hiding – they can’t believe what people are capable of and that things can still get worse.
